Leon Wright Seminary
Background of The Dr. Leon E. Wright Seminary Pastor Willie F. Wilson, preacher, educator and visionary leader established the Leon Wright Seminary of Union Temple Baptist Church on October 4, 1988 in honor of his mentor. The Leon Wright Seminary is based upon the Values and Principles of the African Heritage and Spiritual Contemporary Economics. The seminary idea belongs to the church, as the training of the Apostles, early Church Fathers and churchmen has been historically documented. Presently, the idea is to provide a more practical perspective for daily living and church work. This seminary exists to provide both theoretical and practical studies with special attention to the Afrocentric perspective for its members and the community. The seminary provides a systematic and purposeful program of adult and youth Christian education and spiritual nurture to all (non-denominational) who desire a sound and mature grasp of the dynamics of the Christian Faith and a greater understanding of such faith and philosophy as it applies to personal living and church service. Each semester (6-13 weeks) a variety of courses are presented from seven fields of study. Theoretical courses consider religious life and thought recorded in the Bible. Practical courses include both study and workshops in which gifts and skills may be developed for actual church work. Two courses, Spiritual Dynamics I and II provide the fundamental principle for spiritual nurture. It is suggested that every member of Union Temple take these two courses. The seminary is now named after the friend and spiritual mentor of the pastor. The Reverend Dr. Leon Wright was a renowned forerunner of the spiritual giants and theologians of the twentieth century. He taught in the Howard University School of Religion for more than thirty years. As a New Testament scholar, his writings and teachings stimulated and informed students and audiences all over the world. Of his life and work it is written that "he possessed a brilliant mind and focused determination". He was translated at the age of 84 in August 1996 after showing forth that "God is in me, with me, for me and through me and where God is, there can be no imperfection".
